Friuli Venezia Giulia Flashcards
Friuli Location
Situated between the Alps in the North and the Adriatic Sea to the south; borders Austria to the North, Slovenia to the East and the Veneto on the West
Friuli Topography
Four Principal topographical belts or divisions:
- The Alps: Carnic on the NW, Julian Alps NE; vine growing not possible; make up 40% of FVG
- The Eastern Hills: a narrow band of hills on east side; best vineyards and appellations are situated here
- Central Alluvial Plains: Large and fertile plain in most of the central part of the region
- Lower Coastal Plain: faces lagoons of Marano and Grado; SE section of the coast, Carso, is a stretch of high and rocky cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Trieste
Friuli Climate
Mild, temperate climate overall: Alps protect from cold Bora winds from the north, warmer Adriatic Sea breezes blow in from south.
Substantial rainfall - less on coast, more in Pre-Alps
Bora: cold, winter wind from east, hits the region with force (particularly the Gulf of Trieste), often exceeding speed of 90 mph
