friendship Flashcards
The Boss’ suspicion : ‘Well I never seen one guy … … … … … … guy’
‘Well I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy’
immediate attitude towards the travelling companions George and Lennie
- The boss is immediately suspicious of George and Lennie because itinerant workers usually travel alone in order to increase the chances of getting a job
- This reflects the idea that men in the 1930s did not understand companionship and the boss could not comprehend that George and Lennie shared love for each other
George and Lennie’s friendship: ‘But not us! An’ why? Because… because …………………………………………………..that’s why’
‘But not us! An’ why? Because… because I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you, and that’s why’
- Lennie repeats as if he says this phrase often, showing that their friendship is the most important thing to both
- They both protect each other, and George takes this to the extreme by killing Lennie to protect him from Curley
The search for friendship - Crooks: ‘George………………………………, and it don’t matter. It’s just the talking. ………………………………………. . That’s all’
‘George can tell you screwy things, and it don’t matter. It’s just the talking. It’s just bein’ with another guy. That’s all’
- Due to Crooks’ isolation (Jim Crow laws) on the ranch, he has a desperation for human relationships and conversation.
- Emphasises the damage of loneliness
