The Ego
Balance of desire/society. Represents balance of hedonistic impulses of the Id with the demands of society. Individual becomes a self, not a creature with urges. “Reality principle”; recognizes what the Id desires must be tempered with what is appropriate behavior in the moment
The Superego
Conscience/Society Norms=Guilt or Pride. Punishes Ego with feelings of guilt. Rewards the self’s good behavior with feelings of pride and self-satisfaction. While Ego may temporarily repress urges of Id, eventually fears become internalized
