What is the responsibility of the MEO in regards to fresh water policy?
The operation and maintenance of all collection, storage, treatment and distribution equipment. Accountable to CO for provision of potable water and quality of fresh water.
What is the responsibility of the MO in regards to fresh water policy?
Advising the CO on the risk to health of water taken on board.
Advising on the medical examination and clearance of tank cleaning parties.
Ensuring any ME suffering from infectious diseases don’t work with fresh water.
Arrange and collect potable water samples and get them analysed by a competent laboratory.
Describe potable water management
Concerned with the water requirement, identification of potential contamination, health risk assessment, implementation and monitoring of effective control strategies.

What factors are considered in a health risk assessment?
Population at risk - higher risk if a large number of personnel are consuming the supply.

Exposure - the route and length of exposure.
Local history - quality of shore side suppy.

What are NMOH inspections?
As part of Naval MO health inspections, Naval EHOs will check the fresh water supply and distribution system. This will include a meeting with the MEO and an examination of the potable water section of the ME logistics log.
