Commode
French term for low chest of drawers similar but wider to a chiffonière.
Marquetry
Flush pattern produced by inserting contrasting materials in a veneered surface. Technique for covering surfaces with compositions of shaped pieces of wood or wood veneer.
Bergere
French term for all-upholstered low arm chair.
Chiffoniers
French term meaning a chest of drawers.
Boulle work
Marquetry patterns in tortoise shell and German silver or brass, introduced by Andre-Charles Boulle. Combining wood with contrasting materials like brass, pewter, ivory and mother-of-pearl.
Guilloche
In ornament, a band or border running pattern having the appearance of overlapping or interlacing circular forms.
Fauteuil

Vernis Martin
Used to describe the lacquer work done by cabinet making brothers during the eighteenth century. They imitated far eastern lacquer.
Finial
Usually in the form of a knob, pineapple or foliage, ornament used as a terminating motif.

Porcelain ware from the factory at Sèvres, France, founded in 1756.
