French Revolution - Part 1 Flashcards
Legislative Assembly
New constitution that establishes a “constitutional monarchy” (laws + king), splits into three groups based on what they want:
Radicals, Moderates, & Conservatives
Three political parties. Radicals wanted to remove the king, Conservatives to preserve monarchy, and Moderates were in-between
Haiti revolution impact
means France no longer has income from this colony. France tries to raid Amsterdam for money, but Austria intervenes and a war breaks out.
Jacobins
Most radical party, sans-culottes (working class), dominated the National Assembly (govt), blames “counter-revolutionaries” for problems. Created Committee for Public Safety and ruled during the Reign of Terror(killed thousands of people)
Jacobins split
Gironde (Girondins), from provinces, want to slow down and keep the King alive. Montagnards (Mountain) from Paris, want more revolution, led by Maximilien Robespierre – they accuse Girondines of counter-revolution and execute them.
Maximilien Robespierre
Major political leader throughout the Revolution, called for removing the King. Used fear and terror, creator and leader of the Committee for Public Safety (which executed thousands of people).
National Convention
Government 1792-1795
Declared the French Republic in 1792.
Jean-Paul Marat
Leading Montagnard (like Robespierre) who wrote that more violence is needed. Charlotte Corday killed him in his bathtub (Marat had a skin condition that was treated with bath). Marat was idolized, and his death spurred more violence.
Reign of Terror → Who was involved, what happened, how did it end?
Political fighting among the reformers resulted in the Reign of Terror, in which revolutionaries executed tens of thousands of people + King.
With Maximillian Robespierre as leader 1793-1794, thousands were executed for “disloyalty”. Robespierre then made a list of members of the National Convention to execute, and instead they executed him.
In parallel, France was at war – creates (drafts) an army of 500,000 soldiers to fight against Austria, Prussia, Britain, Church, and invades Belgium and Holland (robs Amsterdam of money).
Guillotine
A decapitation device, used to kill thousands of people
