July 14th, 1789: Storming of Bastille
- revolutionaries stormed Bastille, a symbol of the kings power
what does the revolution lead to?
- abolished noble privilege and centuries’ old monarchy
- led to a representative government
- expanded right to vote for men
- women able to divorce and gain inheritance
- led to development of constitution
Jan. 21, 1793: King Louis beheaded
- beheaded in front of Notre Dame Cathedral
- angers Austrian emperor (his daughter Marie was married to Louis)
- triggers the French Revolution
Austria attacks France
- Marie Antoinette beheaded
- the Convention becomes head of the revolution for the French
The Convention
- headed by the Jacobins
- nominated people to defend France
Maximillian Robespierre
- leader of the Jacobins
- a liberal, eventually became heavily radicalized
- “in order for France to live, Louis must die!”
- died in 1794 by beheading after being shot in mouth
Committee of Public Safety
- Max Robespierre is head of the Committee
- becomes highly aggressive
- “virtue through terror”
Napoleon Bonaparte
- self made ruler
- exceptional military commander
- conquered Egypt
- 1799: seizes power
- in France, brings back slavery, Catholic influence, misogynist
1812 invasion of Russia
- after Russian czar refuses to become an ally, Napoleon attempts to invade Moscow
- fails
1814: Napoleon is captured
- says he will leave political power, leaves, comes back and seizes France, officially defeated in 1815 at battle of Waterloo, back to the monarchy system
Jacobins
French left wing radicals, led by Robespierre, ushered in the Reign of Terror
