What is liberalism?
A political philosophy based on Locke saying that natural rights should be protected by the government but the people should be as free as possible from the government
What is taille?
An annual tax on property which serves as income to the French Monarchy
What is an estate? And what are the three levels?
One of the three classes into which French society was divided into.
1st :: clergy
2nd :: nobles
3rd :: townspeople
What is the bourgeoisie?
Part of the 3rd estate, consisting of merchants. MIDDLE CLASS
Who were the sans-culottes?
“Without breeches,” indicated working class (people wore long pants to represent that they want revolution)
What is a coup d’état?
Sudden overthrow of the government.
What is an elector and who were they in France?
A person allowed to vote, men who owned property in France
What was the government established France after the overthrow of the Directory?
The consulate
What was nationalism?
The individuality of a group of people based on their language, religion, and national symbols
What was conservatism?
The political philosophy based on tradition and favoring honesty towards authority
What marks the beginning of the French Revolution?
Storming of the Bastille
What was the National Assembly? Who was the leader?
The 3rd estate created it to write their own constitution because monarchy was being unfair, wanted republic, leader was Robespierre.
Where did the National Assembly first meet and what was created?
Tennis court, made the Tennis Court Oath (vowed to continue to meet until new constitution is made
What was money spent on ? (Why were they so broke?)
Wars, lavish spending, food, borrowing more money than they had
What was the ROT and who was in charge?
Robespierre ordered many people to have their heads cut off by the guillotine if they spoke out against radicalism
