Debt built up by supporting the American Revolution and not enough taxes coming in to support debt
Jacques Necker
Swedish Banker that comes in to fix the debt crisis. Tells them that they need to tax not only the 3rd estate

Called together to try to fix the debt problem.
1st estate- clergy
2nd- nobles
3rd- everyone else

List of grievances (complaints) to the king.
Tennis Court Oath
The 3rd estate met on a tennis court to make an oath that they will not disband until a constitution is written.
National Assembly
Legislative body that starts the revolution. Made up the 3rd estate
Storming of the Bastille
Governor of the Bastille was decapitated following a storming of the Bastille by the working class
The Great Fear
The peasants of the countryside were rioting against their feudal lords. Rumor that the king was hiring foreign armies against the French people and that there were bandits roaming the streets robbing peasants.

March on Versailles
Poor women of Paris march on Versailles to get attention from the King. They want them back to Paris. They break into the National Assembly and force them back to paris

The government put the clergy under state patrol. People can elect own clergy. Clergy have to take oath to the revolution.
Flight to Varennes
Louis tries to flee to belgium and he is caught right before he gets there and is sent back to Paris

Declaration of Pillnitz
Prussia and Austria promising to intervene if the royal family is harmed

Girondists: Very radical but do not want to kill louis
Mountain: Also very radical but want to kill Louis- Run by robespierre

September Massacres
Working class of Paris stormed the prisons and killed all of the prisoners due to the fear of anti revolutionary activity
Reign of Terror
Thousands of people beheaded of being counterrevolutionaries and eventually just an accusation would get you killed- quick trials
Guillotine
The place where people were beheaded. beheadings were public
Committee of Public safety
Committee that is running Paris during the Revolution- Run by Robbespierre
Thermidorian Reaction
People accusing Robespierre of being a counterrevolutionary and was beheaded
