A

After being locked out of the estates general the third estate reps met on the royal tennis court and took an oath that they would not break up the National Assembly until a constitution was made for France and accounted all their grievances

A

Bankrupt state from helping the Americans/high taxes/little political power for third estates even though it made up majority of the country/influence of the American revolution inspired the French

What was the Bastille storming?

A

The Bastille was huge prison which held thousands of prisoners many of whom were sent without trial it was attacked by a mob on July 14 1789 and it symbolised the problems of the ancient regime, the attack was successful and the fall of the Bastille is celebrated every year.

Who was this mob?

A

It was made up of tradesmen, workers, shopkeepers and the poor hoping to make their lives easier, they also wanted the price of bread to be reduced so they could feed their families. They were known as the sans culotte(without trousers) called this because they couldn’t afford the silk stockings the noble wore

A

In December 1790 this law was passed and instead of the nobles electing the local assemblies would. Pope Pius condemned the law and the law cause as much problem as it solved this meant the Catholic Church was willing to destroy the revolution

What was the flight to varennes?

A

Louis found help from the Catholic Church and emperor Leopold of Austria, on the night of 20 of June 1791 he and the queen disguised themselves as servants of a baroness the were caught near the border of Varennes and captured many people began to think Louis was in contact with foreign powers who wanted to crush the revolution

What was the Outbreak of war on Austria?

A

Many people fled and these were called émigrés , many began assisting invading armies. As Austrian and Prussian armies drew near terror began to spread through Paris, this fear resulted in the most violent and bloodiest part if the revolution. People began to riot and demanded the right to vote and the dethronement of Louis. A new assembly was set up called the National Convention. On the 21 of September France was declared a republic but thy didn’t stop there people accused of being a counter revolutionary were executed. Over a 1000 people were killed
