Significance of the old regime
Absolute monarchy with three social classes-the clergy, the nobles, and the peasants
Significance of Louis XVI
King of France, but a poor leader. Spent lots of money on wars and his and his wife’s lavish lifestyle. Was easily persuaded to do things for the first two estates.
Significance of Robert Turgot
Tried to control government spending and reduce expenses at Versailles. Tried to make a major reform by taxing the nobles, but was denied.
What did Turgot being sent away show?
The king wasn’t ready for change
Significance of estates general being called by Louis XVI
King wanted to win support for reforms to restore economic stability.
What did the third estate deputies want from the estate general?
To be able to meet with the other estates to allow their voices to be heard.
What was wrong with the voting system?
Each estate had one vote even though the third estate was 98% of the population. Third estate would get outvoted every time.
What change did the third estate want for the voting system?
The third estate would get the majority of the deputies to represent the majority of the population and each deputy would get a vote.
Significance of the Tennis court oath
Lower clergy, reform-minded nobles, and delegates of the third estate met up and made an oath to not disband until they had written a constitution.
What change was made because of the tennis court oath?
The king made all the estate’s deputies meet together.
Significance of the National Assembly
Members of the third estate that made reforms.
What reforms did the national assembly make?
Ending serfdom, ending tax exempt privileges of the nobles, and made all male citizens eligible for government and church positions. Made the Declaration of the Rights of Man.
Significance of the storming of the bastille
People were scared that the king wanted to dissolve the National Assembly, so they stormed the bastille, symbolizing them attacking the injustices and inequality of the old regime.
Significance of the Declaration of the Rights of Man
Equality for all citizens under the law and protection of personal property.
Civil constitution of the clergy
Gave the French government control over the church and allowed citizens to elect bishops and priests.
