Estates General
a kind of parliament that only met in a result of royal command.
Girondists
a political club, many of them came from an area in France called “the gironde” They started out moderate and in middle class. Involved in a power struggle and lost, most were send to the guillotine.
Jacobins
a political club that became radical and were responsible for the Reign of Terror.
Philosophies
Educated people who had theories and new ideas about society and government, this led to the age of enlightenment. They were against religion and government.
Radicals
someone who wants major change quickly. The Jacobins became radical and were responsible for the Reign Of Terror
Reign of Terror
happened from 1793-1794. The revolutionary government had extraordinary powers. The Law of suspects arrested noble family or people who held office before the revolution.
Salon
a meeting of intellectuals to discuss exciting ideas.
bourgeoisie
are in the middle class.
they were important to the economy because they invested in new business ventures.
Tennis Court Oath
A pledge that the National Assembly would continue meeting until France had a new form of government. The people united against the government.
Financial Difficulties
The country spent twice as much as they were taking in.
The Bastille
Is a royal prison and fortress. On July 14, 1789 a great mob attacked it. They released all 7 of the prisoners.

(the 14th) He started the palace of Versailles(forced nobles to live with him). He named himself the Sun King (he believed he was the source of light).

Marie Antoinette
King Louis XVI’s wife. She wasn’t educated, she liked to play a role, she came from Austria. Spent a fortune on herself. Interested in court. Liked peasant life. Didn’t care if people liked her. She made France bankrupt.
Third Estate
They are everything.
They politically meant nothing.
They wanted something.
The bourgeoisie, sans-culottes and the peasants.
Had twice as many people as the other estates.
