What year was the AOC created? and why
Created by the INAO in 1935 in response to widespread fraud
EU Standardization
2009– AOP put into effect to achieve more uniform standards .
Levels of AOC/ AOP Quality Levels
(Lowest to highest)
Vin De France (20% of all French Wine)
IGP/Vin De Pays (30%)
74 delimited regions (regional areas, departmental areas, zones), hybrids allowed, can be varietally labeled, 85% of fruit must originate from stated location
AOC/AOP-- 50% highest most exacting designation for french wine boundaries defined and regulated (from regional area ot a single vineyard) grapes planted strictly regulated viticultural practices highly regulated 100% of grapes mmust come from AOC/AOP aging requitements residual sugar allowance
