74 delimited regions (regional areas, departmental areas, zones), hybrids allowed, can be varietally labeled, 85% of fruit must originate from stated location

AOC/AOP-- 50%
highest most exacting designation for french wine
boundaries defined and regulated (from regional area ot a single vineyard)
grapes planted strictly regulated
