Accent Grave
à, è, ù
When it appears over an “e”, it becomes open [ɛ]
(if it appears over any other letter nothing happens)
Accent aigu
é
When it appears over an “e”, it becomes closed [e]
(if it appears over any other letter nothing happens)
Accent circonflexe
û, â, ê, î, ô
It only does anything when it appears over â, ê, and ô
ê = [ɛ]
â = [ɑ]
ô = [o]
(if it appears over any other letter nothing happens)
Diérèse
ü, ÿ, ë, ï
Indicates pause/separation of vowel sounds, only happens on vowels following vowels
Cédillle
ç
It only appears on “c”, makes it be pronounced [s] when followed by a, o, or u
Mute e
Happen when an unaccented “e” is final and alone in its syllable.
Usually silent in spoken french, usually a schwa
