Freedom Flashcards
has frequently been thought to be necessary for responsibility.
freedom
behavior that is in your control, usually called free action. you have some sense of what you are doing and consent to do it.
voluntary action
anything your body does that you do not realize it is doing or that you do not consent to do
involuntary actions
according to him, action may be involuntary for either of two reasons : the person is ignorant of what he is doing or he acts under compulsion.
Aristotle
Aristotle stated that an action may be involuntary for either of two reasons
the person is ignorant or is acting under compulsion
if you do not understand the circumstances in which you are acting or the likely causal results of your immediate movements, you probably do not know what you are doing
ignorance
usually exists when a person is forced to do something : she does not do it of her own will
external compulsion
removes a person’s ability to choose. It occurs when some inner psychological factor forces a person to act.
internal compulsion
fatum means
God’s ordain to happen
the doctrine of predeterminism
fatalism
Iron law of fate
“one’s destiny is written in the stars.”
it holds that an individual not only can make uncaused choices – that is, can make decisions which have no relations to his previous decisions or any factor that represent genuine novelty in his life pattern.
indeterminism
Whatever happens is caused to happen by previous facts. Nothing happens by mere chance.
determinism
people are not responsible for their actions and decisions because these are causally determined.
hard determinism
position that people are responsible for their actions and decisions even though these are causally determined by antecedent factors. Also called as “compatibilism.’ because it is freedom and not free will is compatible with determinism.
soft determinism
