Free will VS determinism Flashcards

1
Q

Define determinism?

Define free will?

A

1) The view that free will is an illusion and that our behaviour is governed by internal or external forces over which we have no control.

2) The idea that we can play an active role + have no choice in how we behave.

Q

2 strengths of determinism?

2 weaknesses of determinism?

A

1)
- The deterministic view helps the world be more predictable.
- Determinism is very scientific (tries to highlight factors that have an influence) allows for prediction and control.

2)
- Determinism cannot fully explain behaviour as it’s too complex.
- Treats people like ‘machines’ - ignores individuals uniqueness.

- recognises freedom of choice, gives people responsibility for their actions.
- emphasises the value of subjectivity.

2)
- suggests there’s no predictability to behaviour.
