Free Will & Determinism Flashcards
What is free will?
Humans free to make choices & not determined by biological or external forces. `
What is determinism?
Behaviour controlled by internal or external forces rather than a persons will.
Hard Determinism is also known as…
Fatalism
What is Hard Determinism?
All human behaviour has a cause, identifiable. Behaviour compatible with aims of science - Actions dictated by internal or external forces.
What is Soft Determinism
All human action has a cause but people have a mental/conscious control over behaviour.
James (1890) - Viewpoint on SD:
Scientists should explain determining forces acting upon us, but still having freedom to make choices.
Biological Determinism suggest behaviour is caused by?
Biological influences `
What approach emphases biological determinism?
Biological Approach
Assumptions that Biological Determinism makes:
- Physiological/Neurological processes not under conscious control - ANS & stress.
- Genetic Factors & Hormones may Determine behaviour
Environmental Determinism suggests behaviour is caused by?
Environmental Influences
What approach emphasises environmental determinism
Behaviourist Approach:
Environmental Determinism sees ‘Free Will’ as
Illusion
Assumptions that Environmental Determinism makes:
- Conditioning
- Choice - ‘REINFORCEMENT CONTINGENCIES’
- Environmental Events & Agents of Socialisation
Psychic Determinism is caused by
Unconscious Conflicts
What approach emphasises psychic determinism:
Psycho dynamic Approach
