free will and determinism Flashcards
hard determinism
free will is not possible as our behaviour is always caused by internal or external factors beyond our control
soft determinism
all events, including human behaviour have causes, but behaviour can also be determined by our conscious choices in the absence of coercion.
biological determinism
the belief that our behaviour is always caused by bio influences out of our control
environmental determinism
the belief that behaviour is caused by features of the environment that we cannot control
psychic determinism
the belief that behaviour is caused by unconscious conflicts that we cannot control
The scientific emphasis on casual explanantions
One of the basic principles of science is that every event in the universe has a cause and that causes can be explained using general laws. Knowledge of causes and the formulation of laws are important as they allow scientists to predict and control events in the future. In psychology, the laboratory experiment enables researches to stimulate the conditions of the test tube and remove all other extraneous variables in an attempt to precisely control and predict human behaviour.
