FREE RADICAL SUB Flashcards
Homolytic fission (needs uv light to break the bond)
When the covalent bond breaks, and one
electron goes to each of the atoms in the bond. Now each atom has an unpaired of electrons
Free Radicals
An atom or atoms with an unpaired electron
Initiation phase
initiates by the breaking of the bonds by
homolytic fission to make two free radicals. (UV LIGHT)
Propagation
(goes like a Chain)
There are two phases here
Free radical generated in the initiation step reacts with a molecule to form a new radical and a new molecule, thereby sustaining the chain reaction. This process continues as the newly formed radical reacts with another molecule, leading to the propagation of the radical chain.
Termination
it terminates when any two radicals combine
forming a new molecule.
