Free-body force diagrams Flashcards
What is a free-body force diagram?
It is a diagram which shows only the object and the forces acting on it.
How do you represent forces?
Using arrows
How do you draw the arrows?
Start them from approximately where the force starts acting and point them away from the object.
How do you represent the magnitude of the force?
You make the arrow longer if the magnitude is higher.
What is magnitude?
Size
What should you do after drawing the arrow correctly?
You should label the arrow with the name of the force.
Can you add more than one arrow showing forces on a single diagram?
Yes
How do you draw normal contact force?
Draw an arrow going upwards from the bottom of the object at 90 degrees from the surface (the normal line) and label it ‘normal contact force’.
