Q

Fred through imagery (stave 1)

A

“his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled”

Warm words
Fred heats himself by not allowing Scrooge to bring down his Christmas spirit
When he enters, he brings warmth, light and joy
The description is an attractive point of view of fred
Meant to use fred as a contrast to Scrooge so we know he is the good character we wish Scrooge to be
He is described in an opposite manner to Scrooge, who the readers will not like very much, so the readers are already happy and have a liking to Fred

Benevolence
Talking about fred’s mother little Fan.
The description used to describe mother can be seen to reflect the way fred acts
Scrooge believes that his sister has a beautiful soul and a kind heart, but is unable to recognise and appreciate Fred’s similar attitude
This is meant to make Scrooge realise how pure Fred really is

Q

Overview

A

Dickens uses…. As a vehicle
To highlight the importance of generosity and kindness towards tohers
Fred portrayed as a particular positive, compassionate and considerate individual who embodies the teachings of the bible; a detsil which would have resonated with Dicken’s predominantly christian readership.
Fred acts as the direct antithesis of Scrooge’s initial character
Dickens may have created such a contrasting description in order to bring attention to the capacity and need for every individual to show kindness, regardless of their social status
