- A conceptual theoretical model (a way of thinking rather than a method).

Identify and confirm that an entity retrieved corresponds to the entity sought by the user.

*One work can be realised through one or more expressions, but an expression realises only one work.
- Work
An abstract intellectual or artistic creation.
E.g.
The constellation of concepts and ideas that form the shared content of all expressions of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.
- Expression
Distinct combinations of signs, symbols, notation, sounds, images, etc., used to convey the intellectual or artistic content of a work.
E.g.
Original English language text of Robinson Crusoe as Defoe wrote it.
- Manifestation
- A physical resource in which an expression of a work appears.
- The set of all carriers that are assumed to share the same characteristics as to the content and aspects of physical form.
E.g.
A set of physical books published by Oxford University Press in 2007.
- Item
- An individual copy of a physical resource.
- An object carrying signs intended to convey intellectual or artistic content.
E.g.
A copy owned by UCD Library.
