Oxymoron
Two opposite ideas joined to create an effect (Ex. Heavy lightness)
Hyperboles
Exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis
Ex. My grandmother is old as dirt
Metaphors
Comparing two unlike thing not using “like” or “as”
Ex. My brother is boiling mad
Similes
Comparing to unlike things using “like” or “as”
Ex. Life is like a box of chocolates
Aside
A short comment or speech that a character delivers to the audience or himself/herself
(Ex. Deadpool)
Soliloquy
Reveals the inner most thoughts and can be heard by other characters
(Ex. “O’Romeo, O’Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?”
Comic relief
Scene or dialogue used to relieve tensions
Ex. The nurse in Romeo and Juliet
Situational Irony
Expectations as to what actually happenes
It was raining outside so you came inside and it starts leaking
Verbal Irony
Speaker says the opposite of what they really mean
Ex. Sarcasm
Dramatic Irony
Audience knows more then the characters
Ex. Scary movies
