Frankl Flashcards
Cause he's a badass apparently
What are the two issues Frankl cares about?
Is a sense of purpose necessary for human functioning
What makes human life worthwhile, even under the worst conditions (Nazi camps).
What did having a sense of a purpose help with at Auschwitz?
It allowed people to live and not give up.
What does spiritual freedom do (according to Frankl)?
It allows one to adopt attitude to one’s situation.
What does spiritual freedom mean?
That humans can find a purpose in life, because they can choose their attitude.
and that they can live in a worthwhile way because they exercise that spiritual freedom
What are the three kinds of purposes in life according to Frankl?
Having an active life (goals)
Passive life and enjoyment (pleasure)
Actions one undertakes, and attitude one takes toward one’s own suffering.
What is the three things that make life worthwhile according to Frankl?
Expressing human dignity.
Make it one’s purpose to express human dignity
If suffering didn’t exist, there would be no way to respond to it, therefore life would have no meaning.
What are the two things Frankl wants to teach?
The meaning of life objectively depends on: what opportunites one person is presented, and what possible purposes life presents to a person.
That spiritual freedom doesn’t give one’s life meaning, because it only allows the possibility for a person to have a meaning.
Why is the third type of meaning important?
If it wasn’t possible to find meaning through suffering (being nice) then there is no point in being noble
What is frankls argument?
Do we have the capacity to adopt attitudes to our situations under any situation.
