Frankenstein Flashcards
…and partly from a strong desire to ameliorate his fate
to become better, improve
at length lassitude succeeded to the tumult I had before endured
fatigue
we passed a fortnite in these perambulations: my health and spirits had long been restored
long walks
…and they gained additional strength from the salubrius air I breathed
promoting health
the winer, however, was spent cheerfully, and although the string was uncommonly late, when it came, its beauty compensated for its dilatoriness
intentionally delaying
i have thus endeavoured to preserve the truth of the elemenary principles of human nature, while I have not scrupled to innovate upon their combinations
hestitation to act from the difficulty of determining what it right, reluctance due to morals
…from the adoption of which so many exquisite combinations of human feeling have resulted in the highest specimins of poetry
fine, pleasing
the event on which the interest of the story depends is exempt from the disadvantages of a mere tale of spectres or enchantment
ghostly apparation, a phantom
…yet my chief concern in the respect had been limited to avoiding the enervating effects of the novels of the present day…
to weaken morally, or mentally
…to the exhibition of the amiableness of domestic affection, and the excellence of universal virtue
kind, friendly
these tales excited in us a playful desire of imitation
a copy or simulation, not real
I shall satiate my ardent curiosity with the sight of a part of the world never before visited…
pressing passion
my life might have been passed in ease and luxury; but I preferred glory to every enticement that wealth placed in my path
act of tempting, lure
yet some feelings, unallied to the dross of human nature beat even in these rugged bosoms
waste
the master is a person of excellent disposition
qualities of mind and character
and yet you rescued me from a strange and perilous situation you have benevolently restored me to life
having a disposition to do good
these paroxysms pass from him like a cloud from before the sun, through his djection never leaves him
sudden and intense episodes of emotional outbursts
there is no pedantry in his manner; but all he does appears to spring solely from the interest he often oveercame by gloom
overly ambitious display of learning, an excessive attention to detail or rules
Now all was blasted: instead of that serenity of conscience
calmness, the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.
“…but is it not a duty to the survivors, that we should refrain from augmenting their unhappiness by an appearance of immoderate grief?”
Excessive, not moderate
This advice, although good, was totally inapplicable to my case; I should have been the first to hide my grief, and console my friends if remorse had not mingled its bitterness with my other sensations.
Sorrow; pity; compassion
This valley is more wonderful and sublime, but not so beautiful and picturesque as that of Servox, through which we had just passed.
of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe
Thine earthly rainbows stretched across the sweep / Of the ethereal waterfall, whose veil / Makes some unsculptured image;…
extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world
