In Greek mythology, who was Prometheus?
Greek God (Titan) who created human beings and stole the fire from the Gods being punished for it.
Why is Prometheus relevant to Frankenstein?
The subtitle of the novel is “or The Modern Promethus”
Promethean
Characteristic of the titan (demigod) Prometheus, relating to being an overreaching tied up with a punishment
Parthenogenesis
A form of asexual reproduction where the offspring is produced without the embryo being fertilised by the male
Tabula rasa
A phrase by Locke which means that we are born as an “empty sheet” without any of built-in mental content and the idea that all the knowledge comes from later perceptions and experiences we gain throughout our lives.
Empiricism
Opposed to rationalism: the idea that a priori knowledge doesn’t exist. Knowledge can only be gained through experience and rigorous experimentation.
