Motives for his voyage:
- Wanted revenge for the Spanish attack on Hawkins’ fleet in 1568
- Wanted riches: Gold, silver etc.
- Wanted to damage Spanish (Most powerful Roman Catholic Country), he was puritan
- Hoped to find new lands to claim for the Queen - Provide merchants with new trade opportunities
Coast of Africa and across the Atlantic
1577-April 1578
Captured Portuguese ship and cargo of wine
Crew began to quarrel
East Coast South America
April-August 1578
Sailed further South - more quarrels
June 20th, fleet anchored at Port St Julian 0 some crew went to trade but were attacked by locals - 2 were killed
Thomas Doughty was accused of mutiny and put on trial - was found guilty and executed
Attacking Spanish settlements
Sept 1578-April 1579
Hit by storms - lasted over 1 month
The Marigold sank
The Elizabeth got lost and sailed back to England
The Golden Hind was alone and short of food and water
Later, they attacked Spanish settlements and captured wine, gold and coins - In Africa, 57 ingots of silver
The voyage home
April 1579-Sept. 1580
Faced Spanish attacks if he sailed South so wanted to find route back to England around N America
Landed his prisoners in Mexico and sailed North
July 1579 - The Golden Hind anchored in a bay near San Francisco - Drake claimed the land and called it New Albion
Natives thought Drake was a God and gave him gifts of feathers and tobacco
Later, landed on the Molucca Islands - locals were friendly
Sailed to Ternate - made a treaty with King - allowed English merchants to trade with them - 7 tons of cloves, ginger and pepper was loaded on board
When did the Golden Hind land at Plymouth
26th September 1580
Result of Drake’s voyage:
Drake became a national hero
First Englishman to sail around the world
Launched successful attacks on the Spanish empire
Brought back £140000 (£200 million today) worth of gold, silver and jewels
Claimed new lands for England and made trading contacts with the Spice Islands
