What event caused Muscadet to only produce white wines?
1709 frost decimated the region.
A moratorium was placed on planting red grapes.
What is
Cru Communaux?
A term signifying the renewed push for quality and terroir driven wines in Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine AOP.
Wine must be labeled with a sub-zone (‘Cru’), and may not be labelled ‘Sur-Lie’ as the aging requirements for the wines already surpass that of ‘Sur-Lie’.
Current ‘Crus’: (all on Sèvre river)
- Le Pallet
- Gorge
- Clisson
Pending ‘Crus’ (2014?):
- Goulaine (on loire river)
- Château Thébaud (on maine river)*
- Monieres-St-Fiacre (junction of maine & sèvre)
- Mouzillon-Tillieres (inland, btwn loire & sèvre)*
Just started application process:
- La Haye Fouassière (sèvre, nw of Le Pallet)
- Vallet (inland, east of Le Pallet)
What is
Hermine d’Or?
An unofficial label term that promotes terroir and stresses ageability in Muscadet.
This was put in place by some “quality minded” producers. Wines must undergo a blind tasting to qualify.
==========
Guy Bossard is a famous example of this with his Domaine de l’Ecu wines:
- Granite
- Gneiss
- Orthogneiss
