What is nominalisation?
. Turning verbs into nouns
. Transforms an ordinary action into a concept or an item- can make an action appear ‘larger’ or provide an action with a larger status
What is morphology?
The study of internal structure of words
What is a free morpheme?
Available on its own
What is a bound morpheme?
Only has meaning when attached to a free morpheme (prefix and suffix)
What is a main clause?
A clause that can stand on its own
What is a compound sentence?
Two main clauses, joined by a conjunction
What is a subordinate clause?
A clause that cannot stand on its own
What is a complex sentence?
One main clause and one subordinate clause, joined by a subordinating conjunction
What is a relative clause?
Extra information that provides meaning
What is a noun phrase?
A group of words with the noun at its head
What is a prepositional phrase?
A group of words that illustrates the position of the subject
What is a verb phrase?
A group of words with a verb at its head
What is active voice?
What the subject does
What is passive voice?
Focuses on the action itself
What is a simple sentence?
an adverb starter and prepositional phrase
What is a complex compound sentence?
Two or more clauses and at least one subordinate clause
What is adjunct?
Additional information that is not essential
What is a complement?
A phrase or clause that is required in order to complete a sentence
What is an exclamatory sentence?
To make a point/ exclaim (!!)
What is a declarative sentence?
To make a statement
What is an imperative sentence?
To make a command
What is an interrogative sentence?
To ask a question (??)
