Frameworks Flashcards
Where is chlorophyll contained?
in chloroplasts, in the mitochondria
What are the methods for measuring primary production?
harvest methods and gas flux methods
what are gross productivity and net productivity?
GPP: rate of energy capture
NPP: rate of energy stored as biomass
What are 3 ways to map energy transfers?
- watch what animals eat
- study feces
- gut content analysis (visual or chemical assessment)
what does the trophic pyramid demonstrate?
that there are enormous energy losses
Why is population density dependent?
inverse relationship between population growth rate and population density. population growth rate declines as density increases
what are r-selected and k-selected reproductive strategies?
r-selected: strategies that are determined by the reproductive capacity of the species. they lead to exponential growth
k-selected: strategies that are determined by the carrying capacity of the environment. they contribute to replacement within relatively stable populations
r = reproductive capacity
k = carrying capacity
what are the components of the population growth curve?
dN/dt = rate of increase
N = population size
r = reproductive capacity
K = carrying capacity
dN/dt = rN((K-N)/K)
compare populations of parts with eusociality
eusociality is when the unit of viability is an entire community/population. For example, a bee cannot survive without its hive. Eusocial organisms depend on each other
4 components:
- must live in multigenerational communities
- practice division of labor
- behave altruistically
- individuals are ready to sacrifice personal interests for that of the group
What are socio-ecosystems?
human ecologies
