Compound Fracture
A break with an external wound
complicated fracture
A break with an injury to anorgan
impacted fracture
The bone is fracture and then firmly driven into each other
Complete fracture
The bone is broken into two or more pieces
Transverse Fracture
The bone is fractured along a horizontal line
Spiral fracture
The bone is twisted until it breaks
Comminuted Fracture
Bone splinters into more than two pieces
Epiphyseal Fracture
A fracture along the epiphyseal line
Incomplete Fracture
The bone is bent, or partially broken, but the periosteum is intact.
Greenstick Fracture
The bone bends until it becomes partially broken (usually seen in adolescents)
Compression fracture
The bone has been crushed – usually by an indirect force
Avulsion Fracture
A ligament breaks off a portion of the bone.
Osteochondral Fracture
The articular cartilage is pulled away from the bone.
Stress Fracture
Crack in the bone due to overuse.
Simple Fracture
A break with no external wound
