Fracture Mechanics 4 theory Flashcards
What is the resistance to fracture of a material known as
Fracture toughness
What does fracture toughness depend on?
Temperature, environment, loading rate, the composition of the material and its microstructure.
What is the Charpy Impact test used for?
To quantify the relative toughness (the amount of energy required to fracture a notched specimen) of a material under loading. Still widely used as it is simple and inexpensive.
What are the most widely used test configurations?
The single edge notch bend (SENB or three point bend), and the compact tension (CT) specimens
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the compact specimen?
Uses less material but more expensive to machine and more complex to test compared with the SENB specimen.
