Fracture Mechanics 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the stress intensity Factor?
A
measure of the stress intensity near the crack tip
2
Q
What is fracture toughness?
A
A material property, which is a measure of the
material’s resistance to brittle failure when a crack is present.
3
Q
When a crack grows where does the energy come from?
A
Griffith deduced that the energy comes from strain energy previously stored in the highly stressed region around the crack tip. This was originally supplied as work done by forces applied to the body.
4
Q
Where does the energy go?
A
New surface energy, sound and plastic deformation around the crack tip.
