Fractions Flashcards
Decimal Fractions?
0.25 based on common fractions, whole number & place value.
Common Fractions?
1/4 based on the part/whole concept.
Fractions
Parts of a whole. Slit into equal parts, each part is in relation to original object.
Intuitive Fractions
Everyday experience.
Region Models
2D & 3D shapes divided into congruent pieces.
Length Models
String, strips, rope, helps to count along a number line.
Area Models
Similar to region, but the shape is divided into pieces with the same area, not shape.
Set Models
Collections of objects, counters, to build understanding of fractions of a set.
Real World Models
Must be careful with accuracy, cutting pizzas into eighths aren’t the same size.
Fractions as a Part of a Whole Concept
Create difference fractions from different denominators-
- Identify the whole
- Partition into equal parts
- Name the parts (fifths)
- Select the number of parts (3/5)
- Name the fraction (three fifths).
Finding a whole from a part.
Practice making wholes from given a part.
FRACTION FAMILY INVESTIGATIONS
cut 4 coloured circles into different fractions, use to generate equivalent, perform +&- and compare size of fractions. Write sum and visualise to aid mental computation.
Fractions as part of a set.
Find 1/3 of 20.
Use concrete materials and give reverse problems. Eg. 6counters are 1/3 or a set, what’s the whole?
Fractions as Division
3 divide by 5… 3 pizzas for 5 people. Cut each pizza into five and each gets 3 pizza pieces. This helps with improper fractions.
Symbols- top # divided by bottom #
Fraction Computation
Add & Subtract - use fraction circles, effective questioning, fraction pieces so they can visualise.
Multiply- language important ‘6 groups of 1/2’. Number line, match 6 halves to make 3 wholes.
Divide - ‘how many halves in 6? Draw mental picture in heads.
