Q

How do we add fractions?

How would I add two thirds to one quarter

A

Firstly you should make your denominators equal by finding the lowest common denominator
The lowest common denominator for 3 and 4 is 12
Then we need to keep the fractions equivalent. This involves multiplying the numerator.
So 2/3 becomes 8/12. And 1/4 becomes 3/12
Now that the denominators are the same we can add the numerator. This equals 11/12

Q

How do we convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa?

A

To change improper into a mixed number
Divide the numerator by the denominator and give your answer as a remainder.
The answer is how many wholes you have. The remainder stays as a fraction.
13/4= 3 and 1/4
Changing mixed numbers is the reverse
Multiply the whole numbers by the denominator then add to the current fraction
2 and 1/8. 2x8 = 16. 16+1=17. 17/8

Q

How do we cancel down fractions?

A

Cancelling down is the same as making your fraction into its lowest terms.
Find a common factor between the denominator and the numerator e.g. 12/20 the common factor is 4
Then divide both the numerator and the denominator by the factor. 3/5

Q

What do you do when you multiply fractions

A

Multiply the denominators together and then multiply the numerators together.
Cancel down your fraction
If you have a mixed number it must be converted to an improper fraction before multiplying

Q

How do you divide fractions?

A

Firstly change any mixed numbers to improper fractions.
Secondly flip the second fraction upside down so the numerator is now the denominator and vice versa.
Then multiply instead of dividing
