greatest common factor
is used to reduce a fraction. You find the greatest factor both the numerator and denominator share and divide.
Example: 8/24 they share the factors of 1, 2, 4, and 8. By dividing by 8, I will reduce the fraction to its lowest terms.
Lowest common denominator
to add or subtract fractions, you find the lowest common denominator.
Example: 1/4 + 5/6
the denominators 4 and 6 have the factors 12, 24, 36 in common. 12 is the lowest common denominator
