Fractions Flashcards
How would you do 4/5 divided by 3/10?
Use Keep Flip Change. Keep the 4/5 as it is. Flip the second fraction to turn it into 10/3. Now change the divide sign to a multiply sign. Now the question is 4/5 x 10/3. Multiply 4 and 10, and 5 and 3 to give you 40/15. If, like in this case, result is an improper fraction then you must change it to a mixed number. How many 15s go into 40? 2. How many left over? 10. So you have 2 10/15 which can be simplified to 2 2/3.
How would you add 1/4 and 6/16?
First, find the lowest common denominator for the bottom two numbers which is 16 in this case. I multiply 4 by 4 to get 16 so I must multiply 1 by 4 as well leaving 4/16 + 6/16. Add the top numbers, leaving me with 10/16. Simplify to get 5/8.
How would you solve 2/3 of 17kgs?
Well first you can note that ‘of’ is th same as ‘multiply’ so you can straight away see that you should do 2/3 x 17. Imagine the 17 as 17/1. Multiply 2 and 17, and 3 and 1. You get 34/3. Covert it to a mixed number. How many 3s in 34? 11. How many left over? 1. You now have 11 1/3. Simplify if possible.
