Fractions Flashcards
Basic fractions’ properties
I. Fractions with denomenator of 1 is equal to the numerator [n/1=n];
II. There are no fractions with zero in the denominator;
III. n/n = 1;
IV. Reciprocals: a/b -> b/a,
The product of any reciprocals is 1
Properties of operations with fractions
V. Fractions can be split by addition or subtraction in the numerator but not in the denominator;
VI. Complex fractions can be simplified by the strategic of multiplication (by every denominator) and division.
Cancellation rules in fraction equation (proportion)
We can cancel:
- factors in the numerator and the denominator of one fraction (vertical cancellation);
- factors in the 2 numerators on opposite sides (horizontal cancellation);
factors in the 2 denominators on opposite sides (horizontal cancellation).
First step when adding or substracting fractions
Get a common denominator
How to multiply fractions
Always cancel before you multiply.
Numerator is multiplied by a numerator and denominator by a denominator.
How to divide by a fraction
To devide by a fraction we multiply by its reciprocal.
