Denominator
the bottom number in a fraction; it tells you how many parts are in the whole
Numerator
it is the top number in a fraction; it tells you how many pieces you are identifying
Vinculum
the line that separates the numerator from the denominator; it is also a division symbol
Proper Fraction
a fraction whose numerator is less than its denominator; it is always greater than 0 but less than 1
Improper Fraction
fraction whose numerator is great than its denominator; its value is always greater than 1
Mixed Number
a fraction that is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction; its value is greater than 1
Equivalent
when two of more expressions (numbers/equations) have the same value or worth
Congruent
congruent fractions are equivalent; they look different but are really the same
Identity Property of Multiplication
multiplying 1 any any number results in the number itself
Simplest Form
you are dividing two fractions until they are relatively prime (the GCFs are one)
Identity Property of Division
if we divide any number by 1, it will equal itself
