fractional distillation of liquefied air Flashcards
1
Q
what is the first step to separating liquefied air?
A
air is first cooled and compressed via the cooler. solid carbon dioxide and water are removed
2
Q
what is the second step to separating liquefied air?
A
liquid air is then separated into its constituents or fractions via fractional distillation in a fractionating column. the gases are separated due to differences in their boiling points.
3
Q
how are gases in the fractionating column ordered?
A
gases which have the lowest boiling point, is distilled over at the top as it is more volatile and has a higher tendency to convert back to gas
