fractional distillation Flashcards
1
Q
how is crude oil formed
A
high pressures and temperatures on the remains of plankton that was buried in mud.
2
Q
describe how fractional distillation works
A
- oil heated into a gas before inserted into fraction columns
- Vapours of hydrocarbons with very high boiling points condense into liquid at higher temperatures lower down and tapped off at the bottom of the column
- Vapours of hydrocarbons with low boiling points will rise up the column and condense at the top to be tapped off

3
Q
where are the smaller chain hydrocarbons tapped off
A
at the top
4
Q
where are the longer chain hydrocarbons tapped off
A
at the bottom
5
Q
from top to bottom, name the oils collected
A
LPG, petrol, kerosene, diesel, heavy fuel oil, bitumen
