Fractional Distilation Flashcards
What is crude oil?
Crude oil is our main source of hydrocarbons and it is a raw materials, it is used in industry
Where do we find crude oils?
Formed over millions and million of years from the buried remains of plants and animals. It’s non renewable so it will run out
How can crude oil be separated?
Using fractional distillation,
This is when the oil is heated and the different hydrocarbons boil off at different places
What happens to longer hydrocarbons in fractional distillation?
Have higher boiling points as they turn back liquid and drain out of the column early on.
What happens to short hydrocarbons in fractional distillation?
Have lower boiling point, they turn liquid and drain out much later on , near the top of the column where it’s cooler .
What are alkanes?
They are hydrocarbons with the formula Cn H2n +2
What are the parts of crude oil?
Gases. Petrol Kerosene Diesel oil Fuel oil Bitumen
What is crude oil used for?
Heating and cooking Used in car Used as fuel in airplanes Used in trains and cars Used in shops and power stationUsed in roads and roofs
