Q

What will you do after water crossings

20
Q

Tyre considerations when navigating mud

A

Can deflate to half normal pressure to float the tyres over the mud.
Can leave fully inflated to cut through soft mud and drive on hard ground.

21
Q

Consideration when driving on sand

A

Deflate tyres to around 15psi. To increase contact patch.
Use 4wd low and try maintain momentum.
Don’t make sudden shard turns or accelerate hard. Or you will dig in.

22
Q

Methods of recovery

A

Reversing out of the obstacle.
Using the gears, steering and accelerator to ‘rock’ the vehicle free.
Dig the wheels and differential free.
Fit chains or change a wheel.
Use jacks.
Towing. (snatching, use low 4, second or third gear)
Place solid packing under wheels. (maxtrax)
Winching.

23
Q

Consideration when returning to hard standing

A

Disengage 4wd and free-wheeling hubs if fitted.
Inspect vehicle for sticks and debris caught up around the grill, suspension and exhaust.
Check the tyres for damage and look for rocks wedged between dual wheels.
Remove transmission wind up.

24
Q

Where to fit chains

A

On all wheels or in the case of only having one pair the front wheels to assist with steering.

25
Q

What legislation refers to emergency response procedure

A

Emergency Act 2004
