Four types of Fog Flashcards
Name the four types of Fog
- Advection fog
- Radiation fog
- Frontal fog
- Sea smoke
Difference between fog and mist
Fog is a reduction of visibility by water droplets in the atmosphere, to less than 1000m.
Mist is the same but not to less than 1000m
What does Advection mean
horizontal movement of air
How does Advection fog occur
Air moves over a surface which has a temp thats lower than its dew point (cooled by conduction)
What type of area does Advection fog usually occur
where warm water (humid air) is adjacent to cold water or cold land
How does Radiation fog occur?
Radiation causes surface temp to cool,
air in contact cools through conduction below dew point,
Where and when does radiation fog usually occur?
Over land and at night and may move over water.
How does frontal fog occur
Mixing of air masses at frontal zone reduces temp of warm air past its due point.
How does Sea Smoke occur
Cold air flowing over warm water may become saturated close to surface by evaporation from water.
How does Fog disperse
Insolation,
Mixing with unsaturated air,
Advection over warm surface.
