Foundations of Nursing Flashcards
Nursing process
- Assess
- Diagnose
- Plan
- Implement
- Evaluate
Assessment
Collection and organization of data
Diagnosis
Identify potential health needs
- problem
- cause
- signs and symptoms
Plan
Anticipate outcomes, priorities, goals, and interventions
Implement
Providing actual care
Evaluate
Evaluate and modify if needed.
Quantitative Research
Aims to describe, explain and test a hypothesis and examine cause and effect relationships. Emphasizes facts and data to validate or extend existing knowledge.
Qualitative Research
Aims to understand, describe and identify meaning of phenomena for a particular context.
Bracketing
Laying aside what is known and being open to new info (Qualitative)
Theoretical Sampling
Selecting subjects based on concepts that have theoretical relevance.
Quantitative Research Process
- Formlate problem
- Review related literature
- Develop theoretical framework
- Identify research variables
- Formulating research question
- Selecting research design
- Defining population and sampling procedures
- Developing a plan for data collection and analysis
- Implementing the plan
- Communicating findings
Qualitative Research Process
- Initial literature review reveals main concepts
- More focused search is completed
- No variables are preselected, develop through the research process
- Questions begin broad and become more focused
- Research is guided by collection of data
Stages of disease
- Exposure / injury
- Latentcy / Incubation (no evident signs or symptoms)
- Prodromal period (mild non-specific signs/symptoms_
- Acute - disease in full effect
- Remission (second latent phase)
- Covalescence (patient progresses toward recovery)
- Recovery - (Pt returns to normal function with no signs or symptoms of disease)
Latency / Incubation phase of disease
Occurs after exposure or injury. No evident signs or symptoms of disease.
Prodromal period of disease
Patient shows mild, no specific signs and symptoms of disease.
Acute state of disease
Disease in full effect
Remission stage
Secondary latency phase
Convalescent stage of disease
Patient progresses toward recovery
