What is Law?
A system of rules which a particular country recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce penalties
Difference between laws and rules
Laws are created by parliament and if broken then a federal penalty is given. Rules are created by groups and if broken disciplinary action is taken but nothing federal.
Why are laws necessary in Australia
Laws are created to make sure that everyone understands what is expected of them as a member of society and what they can expect of others, including government.
Characteristics of an effective law
Thus, for a law to be effective, it must be acceptable to the community otherwise members of the community may be inclined to disobey the law.
Why might law need to change
Changing community values, Changing expectations for the legal system, changes in community awareness, changes in technology and changes in international relations.
How do laws change
First the law goes through the house of representatives, then the senate and then the governor general.
Role of political parties
A political party is defined as a political group that is officially recognized as being part of the electoral process and who can support (put forth) candidates for elections
What are the main law making bodies in Australia?
Federal Parliament, State Parliament and Local Councils
What is democracy
Democracy is a form of government in which the people have the authority to deliberate and decide legislation, or to choose governing officials to do so.
What is a constitutional Monarchy
system of government in which a monarch shares power with a constitutionally organized government.
What is a federation of states?
a group of organizations, regions, countries, etc. that have joined together to form a larger organization or government
What is a separation of powers?
Divides the institutions of government into three branches: legislative, executive and judicial: the legislature makes the laws; the executive puts the laws into operation; and the judiciary interprets the laws.
