Foundations of geology, Lecture 2 Flashcards
Principle of uniformitarianism
Present day geologic processes have operated throughout geological time.
Three classifications of rocks
igneous,
sedimentary,
metamorphic,
Igneous rocks
Form by cooling and solidification of molten rock.
Sedimentary rocks
Form by hardening and cementation of layers of sediment deposited at the Earth’s surface.
Metamorphic rocks
Form from pre-existing rocks by transformations in the solid state under intense heat and pressure.
Two categories of igneous rocks
intrusive,
extrusive
Intrusive igneous rocks
Magma intrudes into unmelted rock and cools slowly (Grotzinger & Jordan, 2020).
(plutonic - don’t come to the surface)
Are intrusive igenous rocks coarse or fine grained?
coarse grained
Example of an intrusive igneous rock?
granite
How to recognise intrusive igneous rocks?
their large, interlocking crystals
Extrusive igneous rocks
Form when magma erupts at the surface and cools rapidly (Grotzinger & Jordan, 2020).
Are extrusive igenous rocks coarse or fine grained?
fine grained
Example of an extrusive igneous rock?
Basalt
What do different colours in rocks represent?
different minerals
Examples of sedimentary rocks
5
sandstone claystone mudstone chalk limestone
