Heart protector; one of the ministerial fires
Functions similarly to the heart but acts as a first line of defense

Lower jiao: (drainage ditch) below umbilicus; contains liver and kidney

Function like yin organs (storing not excreting) shaped like yang organs (hollow)

Excess Yin/Full Cold Symptoms
Cold limbs, weakness, contracture, pain improved with heat, pale tongue, slow and/or deep pulse
Excess Yang/Full Heat Symptoms
Restlessness, headache, irritability, pain worse with pressure, red tongue, full and/or rapid pulse
Yin Deficiency/Empty Heat Symptoms
Signs of heat which don’t arise from excessive yang
Night sweats, insomnia, red tongue, thin and rapid pulse
Yang Deficiency/Empty Cold Symptoms
Signs of cold not from excess yin
Lethargy, pain, fatigue, weakness, pain improves with heat and pressure, pale tongue, slow and weak pulse
