Q

What is convention?

A

It’s what we in general agreed to stick to. Anyone can use anything for anything but as a whole we stick to one method.

There are rigid conventions and there are softer ones where you do not need to be strict.

Q

What are confusing symbols?

A

Some symboles can mean more then one things but we use context to identify them.

I.e: -7 can mean negative 7 or subtract 7

But 7–7, the first - means to subtract and second - means negative 7, in context.

Q

What are the 2 most important personalities of fractions?

A
  1. We use position on the number line, rather then decimals.]

Q

What is the secret 1?

A

The secret 1 hides:

  1. If top and bottom of a fraction is same = 1
  2. Every number has 1 hidden beneath it
  3. After cancelling, if there is nothing on top, there is a secret 1.

Q

Identities 1

A

Sometimes some expressions are definitely equal: 20x = 14x+6x

Sometimes, they are definitely not: 20 = 14+7

Sometimes, it might be: 20x = 14x+6

Q

Which expressions are identities?

A

An expression is an identity, if it’s 2 expressions are definitely equal and they both have at least one unknown.

2(x-4) = 2x-8

Otherwise, it is not an identity

Q

What is distributive property?

A

It’s another term for expanding bracket.

The fact that we multiply the term outside the bracket with everything inside the bracket.

17
Q

How to factorise fully?

A

Take the highest common factor when factorising.

18
Q

How to factorise into a pair of bracket, when you cannot find the HCF?

A

6x²-19x+15
a b c

  1. Multiply a*b = 90
  2. Find factor pairs of 90 which add to make b (19) = 1,90 2,45 3,30 5,18 6,15 9,10
  3. It’s 9,10
  4. Replace 19x with factor pairs = 6x²+9x +10x+15

Then factorise 2 brackets, if brackets match then put all is 2 brackets and that’s done
