Number
Magnitude/absolute value and it’s symbol?
- Magnitude or absolute value is the size of a number, regardless of negative or positive.
- Symbol for magnitude is |800|
(Either + or - 800 are the same)
Real and unreal numbers?

Symbol and Meaning
What is convention?
It’s what we in general agreed to stick to. Anyone can use anything for anything but as a whole we stick to one method.
There are rigid conventions and there are softer ones where you do not need to be strict.
What is the dot symbol?
The . is used, rather then x as it’s neater.
What are confusing symbols?
Some symboles can mean more then one things but we use context to identify them.
I.e: -7 can mean negative 7 or subtract 7
But 7–7, the first - means to subtract and second - means negative 7, in context.
What are the 4 different personalities of fractions?
- Position on the number line
- Parts of a whole
- Division 1*2
- Rational number or ratio 2:7
What are the 2 most important personalities of fractions?
- We use position on the number line, rather then decimals.]
- Division, but we use the line rather the division symbol
What is the secret 1?
The secret 1 hides:
- If top and bottom of a fraction is same = 1
- Every number has 1 hidden beneath it
- After cancelling, if there is nothing on top, there is a secret 1.
Identities 1
Sometimes some expressions are definitely equal: 20x = 14x+6x
Sometimes, they are definitely not: 20 = 14+7
Sometimes, it might be: 20x = 14x+6
Which expressions are identities?
An expression is an identity, if it’s 2 expressions are definitely equal and they both have at least one unknown.
2(x-4) = 2x-8
Otherwise, it is not an identity
What is the identity symbol and why can’t they be solved?
The symbol is ≡
They are not solvable as they will always go back to the original
What does mathematically undefined mean?
It means, something that does not make sense in maths.
Such as, you cannot divide by 0.
