Foundations 1.1-1.4 Flashcards
What is a chemical composition?
Elements that make up the compound.
What are subscripts?
Number of atoms of each element in the compound.
What do we do when a subscript is both in an outside a parentheses in a chemical formula?
We multiply the subscripts.
How do we make an educated guess for a hypothesis?
We must do Preliminary research.
(1) literary research
(2) preliminary experiment
What is the difference between a physical and chemical change?
A physical change describes a change that does not produced a new substance. While chemical change undergoes a change and it does produce a new substanceEx: Precipitation, heat/light, cloudiness.
What is preliminary experimentation?
An experiment done before you make hypothesis to getting additional information.
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of matter.
What are the two things that something needs to have to be considered matter?
Matter includes:
1) mass ( Made up of particles
(2) volume (takes up space)
What are the three things we study in chemistry?
- The properties, composition and structure
- The changes matter undergoes
- The energy associated with those changes
What is science in general
The methodical expiration of nature and logical explanation of the observation.
Who is Robert Boyle (1661)?
An early scientist whose ideas led to the development of the scientific method, sometimes referred to as the father of chemistry. (Not the father of modern chemistry)
Who is Antoine Lavoisier? (Late 1700 century)
An early scientist who built a magnificent laboratory and invited scientists to view and study it. Conducted numerous controlled experiments including decomposing water. And establish several of the laws of chemical combination including the law of conservation of mass. He organize chemistry into a comprehensive science and is generally referred to as the father of modern chemistry.
What type of chemistry are we studying in this introduction class?
Inorganic chemistry.
What is organic chemistry?
Studies substances contain carbon.
What is in inorganic chemistry?
Studies substances that contain little or no carbon.
